It is rare that a product developer has the chance to learn from thousands of users in a short period of time. It is even more rare to be able to talk with new users face-to-face within moments of first downloading your app. All new users are added to a conversation (Hello Volley) with Joe & Josh to ask questions, give feedback, and learn how to use Volley. While this has been a great experience for our users, it has been an even greater experience for us.
Over the past few months, our users taught us about areas of confusion, lack of grounding, unclear instruction, unnecessary information, and points of friction. We've been taking good notes and redesigned the experience to create a greater likelihood of success for a new user. We've been testing the new experience behind the scenes with some of our most active users and are now excited to be rolling it out to you.
While rolling up all conversations and channels into a master view was a great feature for a power user, it made new users queasy. We were afraid of a revolt from our power users, but we've actually found they appreciate having a "space" for things creates some valuable separation and makes the app much more usable.
Some of the names we initially chose caused confusion with our users. There were two common suspects–"personal" and "team."
The term "personal" didn't seem to be the right name for the place where you have conversations with other professionals in your network. Therefore we're changing "Personal" to "My Network"
And the term "team" works in some instances but caused confusion in other use cases. For that reason, we're changing the name from "Team" to "Workspace."
A great UI needs no explanation. But, we can't resist showing you around. All of the changes you see here were made to reduce confusion, increase clarity, and bring common actions closer to the surface.
We would like to express gratitude for our devoted users, our product council, and our fan club for helping guide us in the right direction. As always, if you have any questions or feedback, we would love to hear from you on Hello Volley.
Here's to a more productive future!
